~Meet the Sugarmakers~

Chris

Chris White -Owner
My grandfather was a dairy farmer, as was his father, and grandfather before. They made maple syrup on the farm, living off the land. When the farm closed down my father and mother moved and purchased 120 acres of sugar woods and began tapping trees. Years later, when I joined the maple farm, I started Mount Mansfield Maple Products as a way to sell my share of our maple syrup crop. Initially Mansfield Maple consisted of a website and a post office box. The only product we offered was maple syrup. We boxed up the jugs in the garage of our apartment at night and worked the family Christmas tree farm during the day. As Mansfield Maple grew we began to offer maple candy. My wife and I bought a house, and we converted the entire downstairs into a maple kitchen. More products were developed, and demand for these products practically forced us out of the house. In order to keep up we moved into the location we are in today. We now have 6,500 square feet of production space where we bottle syrup, produce "best in show" candy, develop our mouth watering confections, and pack and ship products all over the world. In addition to our shop expansion, we have purchased additionl forest land and expanded our maple sugar bush to encompass almost 1,100 acres. I am a Fifth generation maple sugar maker. Maple is in my blood. I love everything about maple and look forward to sharing it with you.

Lindsay

Lindsay White -Owner
Lindsay works behind the scenes here at Mansfield Maple assisting with product development and helping to steer the course of the business. Her input has been invaluable and has helped mold Mansfield Maple into what it is today. If she had a dollar for ever time we asked her "What do you think of..." she could retire early (and so could Chris!) Lindsay's full time Job is in Human Resources at a large local Colchester, Vermont company. Lindsay is an active equestrian with a focus on Jumping and takes immense joy from her three Rotties and her participation with Mountain Rottie Rescue

Sarah

Sarah -Shop Manager
Sarah is what you would call the "MVP" of Mount Mansfield Maple Products. She is the glue that holds the production shop together. Sarah has a hand in just about all operations here at Mansfield Maple, from producing maple candy, to bottling syrup, to packaging and shipping orders, to customer service and just about anything else that needs to get done. When things get a little hectic around here, Sarah steps up to the plate, brings order from chaos, and gets the job done. When you call to ask a question or place an order there is a great chance she is the person with whom you will speak. Sarah has two loveable pit bulls at home and a few dozen chickens. One of her great passions in life is gardening and with a quick look around her house in the country this becomes quite clear!

Chris

Roseleni -Production Supervisor and Confectioner
Rosie started out here at Mansfield Maple as a seasonal temp in 2014, and since then she has taken on a whole lot more. Now she oversees our production team, is our chocolatier, and our chief maple candy maker. There is not a whole lot around here that Rosie can't and hasn't done. Rosie loves spiders. She has a massive tarantula at home and any time someone finds a spider somewhere in the shop she steps in and saves it, re-homing out back or on the loading dock during the harsh Vermont winter.

Chris

Jackson -Marketing and Sales
Jackson traveled around the US a bit before he landed here in Burlington, Vermont. He's from North Carolina, but recently spent several years living in Hawaii, before he and is Fiance decided they were looking for a change and wanted some snow. Vermont seemed like a logical choice and we are sure glad he found his way here and ended up on the doorstep of Mansfield Maple. Jackson is our marketing and sales rep and also runs our bottling line. He's always got a hundred projects up his sleeve that spread the word and love of maple.

Chris

Cheryl -Team Leader and Maple Cream
Cheryl produces most of the maple cream here at Mansfield Maple. It's truly an art, and takes many days of practice and experimentation to get it just right. She's also a team leader for the production team and helps lead the crew through the daily tasks assisting in maple candy production as well as our wholesale shipping fulfillment. Whenever she and her husband get the chance they hop in the truck and tow their camper to destinations all over the North East US and Canada.

Chris

Paige -Maple Candy and Production
Paige is from Indiana and interestingly, she landed here at Mansfield Maple after her mother read in one of our newsletters that we were hiring. For the record, her mom still lives in Indiana and stories like this show how small this world really is. Paige is one of our maple candy makers and works tirelessly at every stage of the maple candy process. Paige also moonlights as a dog-sitter and her services are some of the most sought after in the area. Sometimes she goes weeks without even seeing her own apartment!

Chris

Miko -Production Assistant
Miko assists our maple candy makers and is part of the core crew that sees to the completion of a myriad of maple tasks here from candy handling to amazon fulfillment to assisting with the bottling line. She lives at the edge of a picturesque Vermont pond an hour outside of town and falls to sleep every night listening to Loon songs.

Chris

Mark -Production Assistant and Sugarbush Technician
Mark spends time at both our production facility outside of Burlington, Vermont as well as at the sugarbush where we produce our pure maple syrup. At the shop he assists in all aspects of production and up at the sugarbush he puts on many miles in the woods helping to keep the sap collection system functioning in tip top shape. After working the woods all day, Mark also spends many nights boiling in the sugarhouse hustling barrels of syrup as we fill them off the arch.

Chris

Vanessa -Production Assistant
Vanessa participates with all production tasks here at Mansfield Maple. She has an eye for quality and has spet over 25 years working in the manufacturing industry.

Chris

Jayme -Production Assistant
Jayme is not only a Vermont native, she is also a Winooski native, the town Mansfield Maple is located in. She loves maple and assists with maple candy production as well as wholesale fulfillment and bottling maple syrup.

Maple Candy Crew

Seasonal Crew -Maple Candy
Every fall we have a seasonal maple candy crew that comes in to help prepare us for the holiday rush. We produce almost three tons of maple candy each year and most of that is in the last few months of the year. We produce all of this candy without the use of machines so skilled human hands are needed to get the job done. Our seasonal crew removes the candy from molds, candy coats it with pure maple syrup and boxes it up for shipping - all by hand. Without this dedicated seasonal crew we couldn't possibly keep up! A big thanks to these folks for making it happen!

Bob

Bob -Sugaring Operations
Bob has forgotten more about maple sugaring than many people could learn in two lifetimes. He is a reverse osmosis expert, vacuum expert, and an expert in Yankee Ingenuity. He never stops experimenting and believes that perfection can always be improved upon. This drives him to innovate with new and existing technologies to improve process efficiency and product quality. He is not out there to re-invent the wheel... just to make it better. In addition to maple sugaring, Bob along with his wife Joan own one of the largest and most successful choose and cut Christmas tree farms in the northeast. His hobbies are his livelihood, but if you can't find him on the farm, chances are he is enjoying some quiet water in the kayak with his wife.

Joan

Joan -Syrup Production and Maple Cream
One of Joan's real passions is coming up with new maple recipes, whether they use maple as an ingredient, or whether maple is the main ingredient. Joan produces all the maple cream here at Mansfield Maple and her ability at producing the best maple cream around has made her one of the key people at the Champlain Valley Fair's Maple Sugar House where she has been producing maple cream for their non-profit organization for over 30 years! Joan is also one of the key individuals who produce maple syrup here at Mansfield Maple and spends tireless hours beside the evaporator drawing off most of the premium Vermont maple syrup we produce. Outside of the sugarhouse and Christmas tree farm her true passions lie with her 14 year old golden retriever Teala, kayaking, painting and gardening.

Chris

Kirk -Sugar Bush Technician
Kirk just doesn't slow down and doesn't know when it's time to quit. He lives for working in the woods and puts on more miles every year than anyone else tapping trees, fixing problems in the woods, setting up new taps and even working late into the night at the sugarhouse. He loves maple and after working all day up at our sugarbush heads over to his parent's house and helps them boil the sap from the 500 trees in their back yard. We call that dedication. In the off-season, Kirk owns a mowing business and is contracted by many towns in Vermont to mow the sides of the road. He's the guy that works to keep Vermont's roads beautiful!

Chris

Mike -Sugar Bush Technician
Mike is meticulous by nature and when there is a problem with the tubing system he will methodically search until he finds it. We can be sure that after Mike has inspected an area in the sugarbush that it's in tip top shape. He loves being in the woods and even when his work is done he'll still be out there on his four wheeler enjoying mother nature or putting in firewood for the next season. In the off-season mike has an excavation business and a small goat farm.

Chris

Steve -Sugar Bush Technician
Steve is unstoppable in the woods. The man can trudge all day tapping trees and fixing tubing. Steve doesn't worry too much about anything in the woods... even the weather. It took us two years to get him to wear anything other than a baseball cap. For those of you who don't know how cold a Vermont winter can be, we invite you to come up and try this! Now, on the coldest days of the winter you can see him sporting a pair of pink earmuffs. Just don't pick on him about it.

Dave

Dave -Sugar Bush Technician
It does not matter how cold it gets you will only find Dave working in the the woods in a pair of shorts. We're talking 10 below zero, in 4 feet of snow, in a blizzard or wind and sleet, Dave is in shorts. We're not even sure he owns a pair of pants, let alone snow pants. All joking aside, Dave is one of the hardest workers here on the farm. He has only one exertion level: 110%. Everything from cutting trees to making repairs to sap lines fall under Dave's area of expertise. He hates leaks in our sap line vacuum system and spends hours and hours every season hunting down these vacuum leaks. Dave's motto and most used quote: "Sugaring is always uphill."

Tom

Tom -Syrup Production
Tom is a 35 year veteran of the Vermont Forest and Parks agency. He has dedicated his life work to a stewardship of Mother Nature and helping others to enjoy it. If there is steam rising at Cloverdale Sugarhouse you can bet Tom is there to lend a hand or as often as not, run the show. Tom has an intimate understanding of everything in the sugarhouse from evaporator to filter press. He makes sure that the evaporator is running smoothly and monitors sap level, foam action, niter build up and more. He is an expert at balancing syrup density, determining grade and taste tests a sample of just about every barrel we make. Tom's experience and expertise in forestry also makes him an invaluable asset with our sugar bush management plan, determining cull trees, cultivating maple stands and more.

Lee

Lee- Honorary Sugarmaker
Lee works in IT for a large local Vermont company in Colchester. Lee has helped out with Mansfield Maple a number times over the years. Whether it is moving barrels of syrup or providing feedback on stages of product development, Lee is quick to lend a hand. He also often shows up at the sugarhouse when we are boiling to carry pails of syrup as we draw off the evaporator. One of his true passions and talents in life is photography. You'll never find him without his camera, often photographing people, events, weddings or his favorite subject: Mother Nature.
